BEGINNING FLAMENCO DANCE: TECHNIQUE AND PATADITAS will cover both technique exercises and short compositions (patadas) for the flamenco rhythm tangos. The first part of each class will work to build and strengthen flamenco dance movement and coordination through technique exercises for marcaje (marking), zapateado (footwork), brazeo (arms), manos (hands), y vueltas (turns). The second part of each class will work to slowly integrate movements into simple patadas (short pieces of choreography) for the flamenco rhythm tangos. Each month, a new patada por tangos will be introduced.

All exercises will be geared for the beginner level student. New beginners and drop-in students are welcome. Shoes are not necessary for your first session, but if you expect to continue with flamenco, character shoes or flamenco shoes are highly recommended for these classes. If you do not have flamenco or character shoes, please come to the first class anyway and other shoe options will be discussed. See below for further information.

Private or semi-private classes are also available by appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a typical class like? Classes generally start with a warm-up, moving into technique for arms, hands, and footwork. Basic turns and marking steps will be introduced and the last part of each class will integrate movements through short compositions (patadas).

Can I join at any time? Yes, classes are ongoing and we are not building extensive choreographies so you may jump in at anytime. Registration for the full session is recommended, but not required.

What do I wear for class?   A comfortable top (t-shirt, leotard, or tank top) and a long, full skirt (for women) or long pants (for men).

Do I need flamenco shoes?   For your first few classes, you do not need flamenco shoes.  If you decide to continue with classes, you will need to have flamenco shoes or character shoes.  Flamenco shoes are an investment, so it is generally best to start with character shoes.

Where can I purchase shoes for flamenco?   Most ballroom dance supply stores sell character shoes (with a 1.5" heel, approx. $35).  Flamenco shoes can be ordered online (range in price and style).

In Madison: Rosy Cheeks & Co. carry both character shoes ($34) and flamenco shoes ($67).  There are two stores in Madison:
